On May 30, 2017 the mayor of Odessa Gennadiy Trukhanov signed the Zero TB Cities’ declaration that confirms the active participation of Odessa city authorities in the global work on counteracting tuberculosis.

The signing of the declaration was attended by: Member of the House of Lords of the British Parliament, the world-famous public figure in the field of tuberculosis control, Baroness Alison Suttie, representatives of Odessa municipality, the deputy corps of the city council and non-governmental organizations.

Odessa became the first city in Ukraine and throughout the region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia to join the Zero TB Cities initiative. Representatives of public organizations paid special attention to the health care of Odessa citizens.

Modern methods on counteracting tuberculosis which are applied by developed European countries are being implemented in Odessa. Odessa will become one of the first cities in Ukraine to use the European protocols for providing medical care to tuberculosis patients using the potential of outpatient services. At the same time, family doctors will stay the leading link in the provision of diagnostic and therapeutic care in matters of tuberculosis. Patronage service will be strengthened by the potential of nurses from family outpatient clinics. Assistance to the patients will be provided according to the world medical standards.

The Zero TB Cities is a joint initiative that aims to bring the global TB epidemic into the elimination phase by focusing on local government participation to drive and maintain successes against the disease in multiple locations.
Participation in the Zero TB Cities initiative, will give Odessa access to international experience in the field of TB control, training and implementation of the world's most successful models of tuberculosis control, as well as international support for the development of the city's tuberculosis control plan.
