Holocaust victims’ memory honored in Odessa

On January 27, 2017 the people commemorated the Holocaust Memorial Day all over the world. The citizens of Odessa commemorated the victims of the Holocaust in Prohorovskiy Square in Odessa. The head of Odessa State Administration Maxim Stepanov, chairman of the Odessa regional council Anatoliy Urbansky, the Mayor of Odessa Gennadiy Trukhanov, diplomats, representatives of the Jewish centers and organizations, the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, heads of educational institutions and students of Odessa schools, citizens took part in the ceremony of laying flowers to the memorial sign "Road of Death".

The attendees observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of Holocaust and
sparked six memorial candles.

Mass extermination of Jews was begun by order of Hitler in 1933. The first concentration camp was opened in Germany in 1933. The last concentration camp Auschwitz was liberated by army of the 1st Ukrainian front on January 27, 1945. That is why the UN General Assembly declared this day as the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust.
