The Day of Romania culture to be in Odessa

The musical and literary gathering devoted to the Day of Culture of Romania and the birthday of outstanding Romanian poet, writer and playwright Mihai Eminescu to be on January 15th at Vorontsov Palace

On January 15, 2016 at 15:00 in the White Hall of Vorontsov Palace will be held musical and literary gathering devoted to the Day of Culture of Romania and the birthday of Mihai Eminescu.

The Consulate General of Romania in Odessa with support of Odessa City Art Gallery and Department of International Relations of Odessa City Council are the organizers of event.

Reading of Romanian and Ukrainian literary works, the performance of classical and modern music, as well as awarding the winners of literary essay competition "Romanian identity in the European space", organized by Association «Convergente europene» (Romania) are planned to be at this event. The guests of the evening will also watch performances by pupils of Odessa city palace of children’s and youth creativity.

On 16th of November, 2010 Romanian government adopted a draft law under which the birthday of Mihai Eminescu became the Day of National Culture of the state.
Mihai Eminescu (1850-1889) was born on January 15, 1850 in the city of Botosani, Romania. He was a poet, writer, playwright and journalist. Literary critics considered him to be the most significant poetic voice of Romanian literature.

Mihai Eminescu impressed public by his extraordinary mind, an exceptional memory, intellectual curiosity, culture of European level, and the wealth of his style. His works were translated into 60 languages all over the world. At the anniversary of his death in 1989 the year has been declared by UNESCO as the "International Year of Eminescu"  and in 2000 Mihai Eminescu was declared the poet of the year.

In 1885, Mihai Eminescu visited Odessa. He visited the home of Dr. Jakimowicz, undergoing treatment in Kuyalnik sanatorium, lived in the hotel "Strasbourg" on Ekaterininskaya street, witnessed the construction of the famous Odessa Opera House.
