Martisor is a traditional celebration of the spring meeting, which is celebrated on March 1 in Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova. On this day, people give each other meercisors (red and white thread buttonholes) that are worn on clothes for all the March. On the last day of March the meercisors are removed and hung on flowering fruit trees (it is believed that thanks to this tradition people will be accompanied by success throughout the year, and if you make a wish, hanging meercisor on a tree, it necessarily will come true).
In 2017, the tradition of celebration Martisor was included in UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity entitled "Cultural practices associated with the day of March 1". The UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage voted on December 6, 2017 for introduction of "Cultural practices associated with the day of March 1 (Martisor) in UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The meeting was held in Jeju (Republic of Korea), from 4 to 9 of December 2017.
