Odessa adopts experience of Switzerland in combating dangerous infectious diseases

Odessa delegation led by the mayor of the city Gennadiy Trukhanov visited Bern with the purpose of studying international experience in combating dangerous infectious diseases. Photo

The Mayor of Odessa Gennadiy Trukhanov has signed Parisian Declaration in February 2017 and Odessa officially became part of the world movement on overcoming HIV infection. For now our city is a participant in the project "Fast-track HIV/TB responses among key populations in cities of Eastern Europe and Central Asia ". As part of its implementation, effective solutions are being developed to reduce the death rate from AIDS and tuberculosis (TB). The partners of this project are the cities of Bern and Amsterdam.
Odessa delegation, headed by the Mayor of Odessa Gennadiy Trukhanov paid an official visit to Bern (Switzerland) From November 13 to 18. The purpose of the visit was to study the experience and latest practices of successful models of municipalities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

During the visit, there were held official meetings with the Mayor of Bern Alec von Graffenried, the heads of the relevant structural units of the Bern mayoralty, the UN Special Envoy on HIV / AIDS in Eastern Europe and Central Asia Michel Kazatchkine, the Chargé d'affaires of the Embassy of Ukraine in Switzerland Ostap Yukhymovych. Odessa delegation also got acquainted with the experience of Switzerland in organization of mobile drug treatment centers for drug addicts, rest rooms and safe use, labor integration centers.

"Even 30 years ago, Switzerland was the leader in terms of the number of people infected with HIV and tuberculosis. Today, the number of cases of these dangerous infectious diseases in Switzerland has been reduced to zero. We do not need to invent something new, it is necessary to apply the already existing successful experience, "said Gennady Trukhanov.

To study the mechanisms of Switzerland's struggle against dangerous infectious diseases for the introduction of them in Odessa, the mayor instructed to create a commission, which will include profile public organizations, deputies and representatives of the structural subdivisions of Odessa City Council.
