Regensburg. Eine der schönsten Städte der Welt!

(Regensburg. One of the most beautiful cities in the world!)

Regensburg is situated on the junction of the rivers Regen and Danube in the federal land of Bavaria.

Population: more than 150 000 people

Area: 80, 76 km²

History: As the city itself Regensburg was found by ancient Romans about 2000 years ago. But before Romans came this place was known under the Celtic name Radasbonn. Fortification built by Romans on the junction of the rivers Regen and Danube was named Castra Regina. The Gates «Porta Pretoria» which were built in 179 A.C., are considered the oldest building on the Germany`s territory. Here in Regensburg was the main residence of Mark Avreliy, the roman emperor during the war against the markomans (ancient german tribes).

In the VI century Regensburg became the residence of first Bavarian dukes, in 182 A.C. – easternfrank Carolings`s residence. In the X century it became the capital of Bavarian duchy. In 1246 Fridrich the second gave Regensburg the rights called «Free imperial city» with privilege right to choose a Burgomaster and the City Council. Thus, Regensburg had become a free city under the direct control of emperor, in other words free city as it remained up to 1803. Since the end of XVI century all emperors of the Holly Roman Empire of the German nation held the Reichstag meetings in the Old city hall. By the end of XVI century almost all German trade carried out through Regensburg which led to its economic welfare.

In 1980 in commemoration of giving “freedom” to Regensburg there was made a decision to celebrate yearly so-called City Freedom Day. On this day the municipality honor and reward merited citizens.

Culture

Regensburg. Eine der schönsten Städte der Welt!
(Regensburg. One of the most beautiful cities in the world!)

In 2006 the old part of Regensburg was put on the list of UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE. Some people call Regensburg “the northern Italian city”, the others – “medieval miracle of Germany”. They both are right. Buildings and edifices of the “old city” make tourists feel the medieval atmosphere. The way of citizen’s life in summer is like in Mediterranean countries.

Regensburg did something the others tried in vain: it raised a bridge between past and future, between tradition and present, between antiquity and progressive development. Recent years Regensburg became one of the main innovative economic centers of Germany. In witness of this can be researches of the Swiss company “Prognosis AG” about further development and competitiveness of german cities and districts. According to the results of researches held in 2004 Regensburg took 10 place among 439 cities leaving behind Frankfurt am Maine, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and in 2007 – honorable 5 place!

Such famous companies as BMW, Siemens, Infineon Technologies are located in Regensburg. Machinery construction, textile, food, tobacco and printing industry are developed. Moreover, there are 39 different firms active working in the field of field of bio and informational technologies.

The opening of the University and Technical Institute in 60-7`s XX c. became a significant event for the positive development of the city. Nowadays more than 23 000 students are studying at these higher institutions.

At all times Regensburg was famous for its liberalism. During the Reformation period wealthy citizens adopted Protestantism while simple people remained Catholics but it didn’t provoke the conflict. Here in Regensburg Protestants and Catholics, Muslims, Jews always co-existed in peace. History of the Jewish community in Regensburg is more than 1000 years old and still you can see it in the city architecture. As for the Muslim community – it consists more than 25 000 members.

Present Pope Benedict XVI was a professor of the University of Regensburg for many years and thus he regards Regensburg as his second homeland and his eldest brother Georg Ratzinger lives in Regensburg now.

Regensburg undoubtedly can be called as one of the most beautiful and developed cities in Germany.

Mayor of Regensburg – Joachim Wolbergs
