Nicosia (Cyprus)

Republic of Cyprus

Political system: independent sovereign republic with presidential form of government.
Official language: modern Greek.
Currency: Cyprus pound (CYP).
Religion: most part of population is practicing Christianity.
National holiday: 1st of October 1960 – Day of Independence.

Nicosia (Greek: Λευκωσία) is the capital of the Republic of Cyprus situated in the central part of the island. The city is cultural, educational and financial centre of the Republic. The Presidential Palace, the Palace of the Archbishop, Parliament, Ministries, and offices of wholesale companies are situated here.
Population: 200 thousand.
History. The city was found in the 7th century BC at the scene of the ancient town of Ledra (the city’s modern name is used from the 13th c. AD). From the 10th century during Byzantium rule the city’s status was growing fast due to its remoteness from the seashore that became rather dangerous because of attacks of various conquerors from the continent. The periods of prosperity were followed by decline; the city experienced the Ottoman yoke of three hundred years. In 1878-1960 Cyprus was controlled by Great Britain, until it got independence.
Since 1974 Nicosia had been divided by the "Green Line" (a demilitarized zone maintained by the United Nations) between the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 the city remained the last divided capital in Europe. In March of 2007 the concrete wall in Ledra street, the main one in Nicosia, was demolished. A check-point will be built instead.
Economy. Pottery, leather, food and light industry are developed in the city.
Culture. The monuments of architecture and history are situated in the Old City. The most important places of interest are Venetian walls built in the last years of Venetian rule (16th c.), Palace of Archbishop (20th c.), St. John’s Cathedral (17th c.).
Nicosia is a member of international Association Eurocities.

Mayor of Nicosia – Ms. Eleni Mavrou (the forthcoming elections will be held in December 2012).

Twinning agreement between Odessa and Nicosia was concluded on February 2, 1996. On behalf of Odessa it was signed by the Mayor Eduard Gurvits, on behalf of Nicosia – by the Mayor Lelos Dimitriadis.
