On October 18, 2018, with the support of the Ministry of Social Policy and the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, the Odessa Women's Conference aimed at highlighting the problems of gender policy and developing ways to solve them took start in Odesa.

The event was attended by Natalya Fedorovich, Deputy Minister of Social Policy of Ukraine, representatives of the United Nations Population Fund in Ukraine, the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI Foundation), heads of departments of the city and region authorities, deputies, representatives of the National Police and educational institutions, research centers, public organizations, experts, residents of the city and region.

Welcoming all the gathered at the conference the mayor of Odesa, Gennadiy Trukhanov pointed the importance of the forum’s issues, highlighting the position of the city authorities in relation to the participation of women in management decisions.

16 of the 64 deputies of Odesa City Council are women, which is 25%. Many of them are in active position, so it is logical that the leaders of three of the five existing factions are women. One third out of the 15 members of the executive committee are also women. Many departments and offices of Odesa City Council are headed by women. And it is women who form the social policy of the city. It is not surprising that the budget of the city of Odessa is one of the most socially oriented in Ukraine,” noted Gennadiy Trukhanov.

The mayor also spoke about the interaction of city authorities with the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, noting the support at the national level of initiatives of local governments, which in turn represent the interests of the communities.

It is planned that the topics raised at the panel discussions of the forum will form the basis of the City Target Program for family, gender policy, prevention of domestic violence and combating human trafficking for 2019-2021. There also will be prepared relevant appeals (based on the results of the conference) to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and recommendations to Odesa City Council on signing the European Charter for the Equality of Women and Men in local life.

Information:

The European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in local life was developed by the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) in 2004. The Charter encourages local governments to commit themselves in using existing powers and partnerships to achieve greater equality of their citizens. Each signatory body develops an Action Plan for Equality, which identifies priorities, actions and resources for their implementation. The charter was accepted practically by all the cities of Europe. In This movement was launched and in Ukraine.
