On July 24, 2018, Odessa City Council and the office of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Ukraine signed a Memorandum of Intentions and Interactions within the framework of the global program "The Child and Youth Friendly Community ".
From the side of Odessa City Council the Memorandum was signed by the mayor of Odessa Gennadiy Trukhanov, from UNICEF – the deputy head of UNICEF office in Ukraine Laura Bill.

The Memorandum establishes the procedure for the city's participation in the global initiative, and also provides for the city methodological and organizational-technical assistance from UNICEF.

The signing of the document is the first step on the way to getting the official status "The Child and Youth Friendly Community ". Further, Odessa City Council will develop and adopt a specific Action Plan aimed at creating a clean, safe and comfortable environment for the life and development of children and young people on the basis of the analysis.
After the implementation of this Plan, the community will go through the process of independent evaluation and, if it will be successful, the city gets the status of "The Child and Youth Friendly Community ".

"The city of Odessa is a long-standing partner of UNICEF in many areas related to the well-being of children. Therefore it is not surprising to see the city among the first municipalities of Ukraine, which joined the program "The Child and Youth Friendly Community ". For us, it means not only a high level of commitment on the part of local authorities to invest in the future of children, but also the readiness of the city to work on the principles of sustainable development, "Laura Bill noted.

Their readiness to join the global initiative expressed almost 160 cities and joint territorial communities from all over Ukraine. Odessa entered the first 20 of the cities that signed the Memorandum.

"Today, the city authorities are doing everything possible to ensure that the life of our younger generation daily changes for the better. We create decent conditions for comprehensive development, health, sports, recreation and the other spheres of life. I am confident that joining this initiative will open new opportunities for young people of Odessa and will allow realizing even more large-scale social projects in the city, "said Gennadiy Trukhanov.
